I’m 100% behind an alternate solution for Wellington, and below, fellow independent candidate, Lily Brown, poses the question, "How should Wellington deal with its organic waste?"

My view? The outcome remains" the same, but at little to no cost to ratepayers!

Let’s not commit to more high-cost solutions, which will undoubtedly lead ratepayers to higher debt and cost blowouts, which have been overseen by the last few councils.

Lily Brown: How should Wellington deal with its organic waste? (Facebook post 10 August 2025)

Following my post two days ago regarding the WCC's decision to progress with its brand new organic waste collection scheme as part of its Zero Waste Programme, some legitimate questions were asked: Our landfills are close to capacity - what do I think should be done instead?

If Wellingtonians were to agree that the city's organic waste must be dealt with in a different manner, I am a strong advocate for modern, innovative solutions instead of what has just been passed by the WCC. The decision demonstrates that they are living in the past and are not seriously considering modern solutions that are in use by many other cities all round the world.

For example, a NZ company Earth Starch Organic Solutions offers innovative modular, scalable organic waste recycling technology that can handle waste volumes from small community hubs to large-scale centralised installations. Their fast and effective process turns organic waste into soil conditioner in just 4 hours. https://www.earthsos.co.nz/

Similar technologies and solutions have been used all around the world in cities, townships and is a staple on cruise ships.

Andrea Compton - Wellington City Northern Ward Candidate 2025 and myself have had some very positive discussions with them regarding how this could work in Wellington, including the benefits to the communities. Trials within the city at low to no cost to ratepayers were also discussed.

Our Council must be open to smart, modern solutions, especially when it can save millions of dollars every year.

Technology has come a long way. Let's not live in the past but move on to a more modern and innovative Wellington.
